It was yesterday when I tried to turn on my e-book reader. It did not boot up, crashed somewhere in the middle showing only the boot logo (big 1) on the screen.
The best bet is to try to update the firmware of the device. There's nothing can go wrong. Either I have a bricked reader or I have a bricked reader.
Connecting USB cable shows no life - can not mount the device. Now what??
Nothing in the user's manual but via google: Acom sk forums Boot to recovery mode (Back + Power button)!
Without firmware file it boots up seemingly fine after failing to update the FW (to safemode I think). Reboot to normal mode: still hangs.
Long story short:
- Get new FW from Next Papyrus, the latest was v2.4, I have v1.3 on the reader
- Copy the FW to the device, boot to recovery. No FW found. Hrm... I just placed it there :o
It turns out that
- You can't update the FW from v1.x to v2.x
- You can't download v1.x FW from Next Papyrus.
- You can't get the 'transition' FW for updating the FW from v1.x to v2.x
With Google + translate I have ended up in http://www.page-1.ru/support.html
The Instructions looked promising, but can not download the package since the S/N of my device was not accepted. Back to google. In some forums (the-ebook.org thread) found a serial which worked. Cool.
Now I followed the instructions found on page-1.ru:
- Flash the transition FW (v2.0)
- After reboot - the reader is now in Russian
- Copied the FW image I got from the nextpapyrus page (v2.4)
- On Papyrus: Press Menu, twice up (<), Look for the FW update - 5 times down (>)
- Proceed
- After updating I got a booting PAGEone with v2.4 FW :D
No need to buy a new reader. For now

i download the 2 packs from the russian page but i don't know how to continue
i paste the .rom file in my sd car and i tried to reeboot (on + restard) and after 10 seconds a page say me " press ok to downgrade or restore", i press ok but it comes again to the main problem, first page with big one
what did you do?
I have used two .rom files from different sources.
First I flashed the .rom I got from http://www.page-1.ru/support.html (v2.0 - transition rom from 1.x to 2.x). Finally I have flashed the official .rom from Next Papyrus.
I think this should work:
Copy the 2.0 rom to sd card's root.
boot to recovery mode and flash the FW
after reboot, copy the final image to the sd card (remove the 2.0 rom from it).
Either follow the steps to use the main UI to update the FW or I think recovery mode should also work again.

the problem is that i don't know how to boot in recovery mode (when I press (Back + Power button) after 10 seconds apear a text (press OK button to recovery mode) but nothing pass
and when I connect the pageone with usb on my laptop it isn't recognize!

do you know the current FW version of your PageONE?
I can not recall exactly, but try this:
- remove the SD card from the device.
- make sure that the PageONE is turned off - you need to hold the power button for about 5s to initiate the power down. So if you press the power for a short time, it will start booting (and freeze at some point). When it is in this frozen state press and hold the power button for abut 5 sec and wait till the red LED no longer blinks under the power button.
- Press and hold the BACK button.
- Press the power button to start the device (still keep holding the BACK button)
- When the FW update/recovery page is displays, release the BACK button.
- press OK to proceed with the FW update (but you should not have any FW image on the device)
- It will fail - no FW image to flash and it should boot up to the normal UI.
- Now you can connect the USB cable and see the internal flash disk.

thanks for the post! Same story here, and i got the device back to life again with tips from here and the FW from page-1.ru . But that has all the menus etc. in Russian, and seems the official NextPapyrus site has gone, anyone happen to have a link to the official English FW image? (only found one .cz site with some .ROM image, but not sure if that is very official.. )
